Exploring human rights to prevent discrimination in the workplace
Workshop animated by Sue LeMaistre
«We believe that awareness is key to removing barriers and preventing discrimination at source,” says the PEI Human Rights Commission. That’s why the Commission is organizing a free information session in French for employers and the public on Wednesday, 4 June at 10.30 au Rural Action Center in Wellington.
During the 90-minute session, Education and Awareness Session Leader Sue LeMaistre will first describe the role of the Commission, and the rights and responsibilities covered by the Island’s Human Rights Act, focusing particularly on the employer perspective. She will then explain what discrimination is, according to the Act. Basically, it’s “the unfair treatment of a person because of their personal
personal characteristics. Discrimination can take the form of a difference in treatment, such as punishment, refusal to serve or employ, or harassing behavior towards someone,” according to the commission. Ms. LeMaistre will then define not only the rights of employers towards current and potential employees, but also the rights of employees towards their employers.
to their employers. She will also discuss the duty to accommodate, where appropriate.
She will also discuss the role of the Commission in receiving and resolving complaints of rights violations. She will be happy to answer any questions.
To take part in the session, register by May 30, 2025 by contacting Marthe Ngombi at [email protected] ou à 902-854-3439.
