An exploration of human rights to prevent discrimination in the workplace

Hosted by Sue LeMaistre

«  “We believe that awareness is essential to removing barriers and preventing discrimination at its source,” according to the PEI Human Rights Commission. That’s why the commission is hosting a free online information session in French for employers and the public on Wednesday, April 15, at 12 p.m. The session will be held on Zoom.  This session is organised by la Chambre de Commerce Acadienne et Francophone de l’île du Prince Édouard in partnership with the Rural Action Centre in Wellington.

During the 90-minute session, education and outreach facilitator Sue LeMaistre will first describe the role of the commission and the rights and responsibilities covered by the Island’s Human Rights Act, with a particular focus on the perspective of employers.

She will then explain what discrimination is, according to the law. Basically, it is “the unfair treatment of a person because of their personal characteristics. Discrimination can take the form of a difference in treatment, such as punishment, refusal to serve or employ, or harassing behavior toward someone,” according to the commission.

Ms. LeMaistre will then define the rights of employers toward current and potential employees, as well as the rights of employees toward their employers. She will also discuss the obligations to make accommodations, if necessary.

The facilitator will also discuss the commission’s role in receiving and resolving complaints of rights violations. She will be happy to answer any questions.

To participate in the session, simply register by April 10 by contacting Marthe Ngombi à [email protected] ou à 902-854-3439.
